Literacy & Learning Centers
The Intersection of Content Knowledge, Literacy Skills, and Social Emotional Learning
100% of schools that have implemented Dr. Katie McKnight's Literacy & Learning Center "Station Rotation" model achieved measurable academic gains.
“The Literacy & Learning Center that I developed draws from the most critical educational research that supports student learning during adolescence. This grassroots model responds to the learning needs of students from classrooms that are like yours. Literally hundreds of teachers and thousands of students have provided input to ensure that the Literacy & Learning Center model is effective AND versatile.
During professional development sessions you will hear classroom stories from teachers and students that I have collaborated with to ensure the development of strong literacy skills with grade level content.” –KM
Literacy & Learning Centers: An Overview
Listen to Dr. McKnight explain how centers, the intersection between developing literacy skills and content knowledge, can serve students through middle school, high school and beyond. Katie discusses how the self directed activities and short specific tasks that make up centers give students at any age the opportunity to practice and develop key skills.
Why Literacy & Learning Centers? Why now?
Now more than ever, our students deserve engaging learning spaces where they can collaborate with peers, develop literacy skills, gain academic knowledge, and work toward achieving the goals of the Social Emotional Learning standards. Our teachers deserve the opportunity to facilitate learning while developing authentic relationships with their students. Most importantly, we need instructional models that work.

What Educators Are Saying
“Katie, I wanted to let you know that we have been on a short but steep improvement trajectory over the past three years, thanks in part to your learning center strategies and a curriculum that is well-aligned to the performance expectations of our students. I seriously told my superintendent not to be surprised if the State Department of Ed investigated us for cheating on the state testing because I have NEVER witnessed double-digit jumps in proficiency from year to year as we have experienced here.”
– David Powers | Principal, Schoolcraft Middle School, MI
“Once I started implementing Literacy & Learning Centers in my middle school science class, my students started becoming more engaged, showed immense growth and overall started to deepen their understanding of content!”
– Cindy Nelson | Science teacher, Center for Educational Excellence, Tempe, AZ
"I’m really impressed. There was so much more [student] engagement! I’m feeling like this is a game changer."
– Stephanie Allen | 7th grade ELA teacher in Kennewick, WA
